Cape May has been long celebrated for its natural beauty, and these trails are aimed at connecting children with the outdoors through fun, exploration, and hands-on education.
Developed in partnership with the County, the $1.9 million dollar project was recommended for funding by the Cape May County Open Space Board in 2024. The City of Cape May partnered with several organizations to complete the improvements.
These new trails are designed to engage young minds and encourage a lifelong love for nature. They feature ADA-compliant nature trails, an elevated boardwalk, viewing platforms, shade structures, and public viewing scopes. The site, once home to Cape May’s coal-fired power plant dating back to the mid-1800’s, faced significant environment challenges before redevelopment could move forward.
“These new trails offer children a safe and exciting way to learn about local ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation,” said City Manager and City Engineer Paul Dietrich. “Our goal is to make outdoor education more accessible and inspiring for families, educators, and visitors alike.”
The campers of Camp Cape May took a field trip to the trails this summer, where they participated in a scavenger hunt with Councilmember Steve Bodnar. With the start of the school year just around the corner, the City encourages educators and parents to bring students and children to experience the trails firsthand.
The Cape May Nature Trails are located at 711 Lafayette St. in Cape May. They are open year-round and free to the public.
