HAWK HAVEN WINERY CELEBRATES TEN YEARS OF AWARD-WINNING WINES

Published Friday, May 17, 2019

Todd & Kenna Wuerker of Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery are raising a toast to ten years since they first opened their tasting room doors on Memorial Day Weekend in 2009. Their plans to celebrate this milestone kick off with Cape May County’s original Sangria Sundays, a Sunday Funday of house made sangrias, the Mermaid Mutineer food truck, Hit the Road Jack food truck, and more! In addition, Hawk Haven will host Rockin’ the Vines, an all-day music event featuring live performances from some of Hawk Haven’s favorite musicians over the years. In the line-up is Bluebone, Gordon Vincent, John Beacher, and Greg Jones.

Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery began as a dairy farm in the 1940s when Todd’s grandfather purchased the land in Rio Grande, NJ. From there it became a farm producing crops including lima beans, watermelons, and pumpkins under the ownership of Felix’s son, Ed Wuerker. When Todd came of age and it was his and his brother’s turn to take over the farm in 1997, they decided to take a new direction and plant Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

Experts say that the lower part of Cape May County is the premier growing region on the East Coast, and the proof is in the bottle. Hawk Haven was awarded a Gold Medal and was runner up for the Governor's Cup in the New Jersey State Wine Competition for their 2007 Merlot, becoming the first winery in the history of the competition to be awarded Gold for its first vintage. They would later go on to win the Governor’s Cup for their 2012 Signature Series Cabernet Franc. There are now sixteen acres of vines with sixteen European varietals planted on their hundred acre farm, the fruit of which is used for their array of high quality vinifera wines.

Todd & Kenna Wuerker opened the doors of the Hawk Haven tasting room on Memorial Day Weekend in 2009 with their first ever Sangria Sunday. The first sangria to ever be served came ice cold in a mason jar with a colorful straw to compliment the color of the sangria. Sangria Sundays has become a staple of the Hawk Haven summer, held every Sunday from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. If you haven’t made it to a Sangria Sunday at Hawk Haven Winery, this will be the year to go!
